REPARATIONS FOR BLACK AMERICAN DESCENDANTS OF SLAVERY
The United States like many of the world superpowers engaged in the transatlantic slave trade, creating the economies they have today. Chattel Slavery in the United States operated from 1619- 1865 (many areas ignored the order to free their enslaved people up until the 1900s, as Lincoln first ordered the rebel States to free their enslaved people, but not those in border states as he wanted to maintain their loyalty Source) for 246 years the United States obtain free labor enforced by inhumane treatment and conditions. The Enslaved people nor their descendants have been repaired from this act which still has lasting impacts until this day. As of today, the United States has operated longer with slavery (246 yrs) than it has operated without it (156yrs).
As a descendant of Enslaved Africans, my purpose is to teach the systemic impacts on my community, tell the stories of elders that have NOT been recorded or conveniently omitted. Coming to terms with chattel slavery and all that was birthed after it (Jim crow, redlining, mass incarceration, etc) is about healing and understanding and knowing how we are all responsible for repairing the damage it caused.
